Two ways to price card payments
Here is how a zero-fee cash discount program compares with the traditional setup most businesses start with.
| Model | Who pays the fee | Debit cards | Where it is allowed | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Traditional processing | You, on every sale (often 2.5% to 3.5%) | You pay | Everywhere | Businesses that cannot change prices or signage |
| Cash discount | Card payers. Posted prices include the card cost and cash payers get a discount | Included | All states | Restaurants, convenience stores, salons, auto repair |

- Terminal programmed and tested before it ships
- Help with EBT applications when you need them
Add EBT to the same terminal
If you sell groceries or eligible food, accepting EBT can bring in customers your competitors turn away. Most zero-fee terminals handle EBT once your business is authorized.
You apply online with the USDA Food and Nutrition Service. If approved, you receive an FNS number, and your processor uses it to turn on EBT at your terminal. Farmers market vendors and food trucks selling eligible groceries can qualify too. Tell us you need EBT in the form below and your provider will help with the application.
Zero-fee processing FAQ
What is zero-fee credit card processing?
Zero-fee processing is a pricing program that moves the cost of card acceptance from the business to the customers who choose to pay by card. It is set up either as a cash discount, where cash payers get a lower price, or as a credit card surcharge added to credit card sales. Done correctly, the business keeps close to 100% of each sale.
Is zero-fee processing legal?
Cash discount programs are allowed nationwide. Credit card surcharges are allowed in most states but are banned or restricted in a few, and the card networks cap surcharges and require signs and receipt disclosures. Our guide to cash discount vs. surcharge rules explains what to check for your state.
Will my customers be upset?
Most customers are used to card fees from gas stations, restaurants and online checkouts. Clear signs at the entrance and register, and a staff script for questions, keep complaints rare. Some businesses also keep a small monthly fee and absorb debit costs to stay competitive.
Is there really no cost to me?
Your transaction fees go to zero or close to it, but most programs still charge a monthly account or equipment fee. Ask for the monthly fee, any terminal lease or purchase cost, contract length and early termination fee in writing before you sign.
Can I accept EBT and SNAP with a zero-fee terminal?
Yes. Many zero-fee terminals also process EBT once your business is authorized by the USDA Food and Nutrition Service.
